Using Mac OS on SKetchCloud team setup. Issue: The new Athens version has made selecting multiple objects very frustrating. It used to be easy but now it’s a major usability issue. Cause: the hover zone has increased in size to change the selection cursor to either resize or rotate. Also it is on by default and it interferes with basic selection of objects. Background: Prior to Athens, the select cursor ruled - and if you had to rotate an object you could simply press the Option key while clicking a handle to switch to a rotate cursor. Great feature!
Now with Athens, if objects are close to each other and you need to select both, the cursor auto switches to rotate after the first selection click and it takes multiple clicks to select both using various techniques. I estimate I am using 100s of needless clicking every day because of this frustrating usability issue. Not good!
Recommendation: Either put it back the way it was and educate users about the key+click rotation - or make the hover zone for cursor change much, much, much, MUCH smaller.
This is my number 1 issue right now.
Number 2 is that sometimes copying and pasting objects from one artboard to another in the exact same position just doesn’t work. I’ve encountered weird cases that defy explanation. Even pasting from one frame into another frame. I will try to capture the next odd case that comes up and post it here.
I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with these changes.
The rotating change is a deliberate feature adjustment. While I understand it may be an issue for you, others find it useful. The best way forward is to open it up for discussion through a “Suggest an Idea” topic, where people can vote and share their preferred functionality. We can’t promise a change, but this is currently the most effective way to gather feedback. I can create the topic for you, or you’re welcome to do so yourself and explain in detail what you’d prefer. Let me know what works best for you.
Regarding the second change, feel free to share an example of the issue you encountered. We’ll gladly take a look.
Yes please go ahead and add this as a bug fix. The current implementation is not an improvement. Honestly I don’t have time as I have to go back to uselessly clicking my mouse to select more than one object that is near another object. All of the workarounds for this are kludgey at best. This is a really simple fix, easily proven with a quick usability study. This is a major ball drop.. which is unexpected from Sketch. Thanks!
One other issue that totally fails is the new symbol library. We have our entire visual language and components stored in the symbol library. Before, it was 2 clicks to find and pick any element. It provided nice thumbnails of all the objects. Super easy to find things.
Now - it’s a total disaster. Nothing can be found! I click Y to get the symbol panel up, click the pulldown to select a component - and then it pops a set of cascade menus with no preview. The simple categories we had previously in a 2-level hierarchy are now nested in multi-levels - with no preview… so unless you really know the file structure and the component by exact name - you are toast!
Same thing with the type styles previews.. before it showed accurate samples of the fonts and weights in the drop down. Very easy to pick the right style with 1 click.
Now - all the samples look the same!!! Why? Who thought this was a good idea?? Now I have to laboriously read the light grey 3px type label to see if I’m selecting the right font. Apart from failing color contrast accessibility - it results in several mistaken clicks to select the right typestyle!
There’s an expression ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. The examples above are case in point. I’ve always admired the usability and efficiency of Sketch, but in this release it seems like some things were changed for no good reason and have taken a giant step backward.
These are deliberate changes, and I’m sorry you feel that way. We’re quite happy with the implementation, and unfortunately, it’s unlikely we’ll change how inserting or replacing symbols works anytime soon. Regardless, we appreciate the feedback and will keep it in mind.
