With respect, this could become a rant…
I hate the ‘feature’ that Sketch automatically selects a next object after removing a layer, symbol instance or artboard.
It often happens to me that suddenly elements are missing in my layout and I wonder how this could happen. Then by repeatedly pressing CMD-Z I can see where in my workflow it happened … ideally.
This morning I realised that I had deleted an entire artboard on Friday, apparently by mistake. Of course, I did hundreds of other steps afterwards, so I couldn’t just go back to the point where the accidental deletion happened.
I then tried to download an old version from the Sketch Cloud in which the artboard still existed. After I copied the missing artboard from the old sketch file and pasted the current sketch file, I realised that all the symbols that were used as instances on the artboard now existed twice in the sketch document… So I thought about what would be more time-consuming, finding and merging all the symbol duplicates and updating all the prototype interactions accordingly … or undoing the pasting of the old artboard and then rebuilding the artboard from scratch.
I then decided in favour of rebuilding …
After a few hours of further work in the file and a restart of Sketch (this helps with occasional performance problems of Sketch) I realise with horror that apparently in the phase when Sketch stalled again perfomancemoderately it happened to me again without me wanting it by this automatic selection an artboard far outside my viewport was removed … somewhere else on the canvas.
When I realised this I got a nerdrage … and now I’m rebuilding an already built artboard.
Please let us switch off this automatic selection of further layers, artboards optionally. I hate it and it is a constant source of errors.
