How to copy/paste elements without their prototype connections?

I understand the utility of maintaining the hotspots and need it sometimes, but not always; requiring deleting them manually. Is it possible to copy and/or paste just the element without reconnecting the prototype connection?

hello @hierya

One solution I often recommend is to copy and paste the content to the desired location. Then, to clear any existing links, select all the content and choose Remove All Links from the Prototype menu in the toolbar. This ensures a clean slate for setting up new prototype connections.

Let me know if this helps.

Would prefer a shortcut to paste without the prototype links*, but this will do.

*Or one for Prototype > Remove Links from Selection

Thanks.

Hey @hierya,

You can actually set up a custom keyboard shortcut for this action by doing the following:

  • Press ⌘Spacebar → write "Keyboard Shortcuts to open the System Settings window
  • Switch to App Shortcuts
  • Click on the (=) Icon and select Sketch from the Application Menu
  • Then on the Menu Title entry, copy and paste this: Remove Links from Selection
  • Lastly, assign a keyboard shortcut of your liking.
  • Done!

I understand that, but not only is it inconvenient, it’s also too labor-intensive in the event(s) of creating shortcuts that aren’t already in use.

The real issue that this ignores is that there are far too many menu actions that do not have associated shortcuts by default.

Thanks for sharing your perspective! We understand that the current process could be more streamlined, and we appreciate your feedback. I’ll make sure to pass it along to the team so they can consider how to make this feature more user-friendly.

We deal both types of scenarios here—those who prefer to retain connections and others who want a clean copy—so we’re always trying to balance both needs.

In the meantime, I recommend trying @raulrincon 's solution to create a custom shortcut. You can use any available combination, like Shift + Option + R (⇧ ⌥ R), for easier access.

For a full list of Sketch’s shortcuts, which might help in finding unused combinations, you can check here: Shortcuts · Sketch

Hope this helps!

Hey @Cris — There may have been a misunderstanding. Yesterday I marked your response as the solution as it achieves what I was trying to do, but added the bit about shortcuts. Today, I responded to @raulrincon specifically regarding creating custom shortcuts which again is inconvenient, poses challenges and basically is an annoying process. So in summary I was just saying that there should be more default shortcuts already associated with the menu actions. Far too many gaps there.

@hierya we do try to assign keyboard shortcuts to most common actions, and try to be very very careful when assigning a keyboard shortcut to a specific action cause this builds up muscle memory for our users. However, in those instances we do not, the ability to add their custom shortcuts (via the Keyboard Settings panel in macOS) is the perfect way to get the app to adapt more to your working style.
