Why are fixed / sticky elements are always on top?

Hi community,

I’m coming from XD and I’m new to Sketch, testing it out.

I’ve tried redoing a web design which I did recently in XD but there’s a big question which I can’t figure out.

Why is every element – which is fixed – on top of each element, even if the layer is set correctly? The problem only appears in the preview window. I don’t get it! Look at my screenshot.

Hi @mb90ww

Welcome to the Sketch community!

Thanks for sharing your experience. We understand the issue you’re facing. It’s a known quirk, and we’re here to help!

There’s a handy workaround using Symbols and a Scrollable Area that can fix this. Check out this video:

Also, feel free to inspect the sample document:

We hope this helps :crossed_fingers:

Cheers

Thank you Cristiana! Yes it is a workaround, but not ideal for me. Right now, this is a dealbreaker for me. Overall I like Sketch, but the layers should work as expected.

Is a fix for this bug on the roadmap?

Hi Mark  ,

Thank you for your replying. I understand the workaround may not be ideal for your needs.

To clarify, this is an enhancement rather than a bug and is tied to how the tool was designed. While we don’t have an ETA for this change due to our very ambitious roadmap, we believe your input should be considered.

So, to better advocate for your feedback, could you share more about how this workaround is limiting? This will help us better prioritise future updates.

Anyway, thank you for being part of our community!

Cheers

Hello Cris,

I have taken another closer look at your file and tried it out. I think it would be possible to work with it. I first had to find out how the workaround works.

Ideally, I have a long artboard where everything takes place. So I need at least two artboards.

I definitely need to get to work with Sketch more intensively, because it’s not as easy as it looks at first. It has a lot of functions built in. For example, I’m still looking for a way to assign a hover effect to buttons.

Hi Marc

Great to hear you’re giving our workaround a try!

Regarding feeling a bit lost when diving into new software, that is completely normal :diving_mask:. We’ve all been there! And honestly, as long as we keep that explorer’s spark alive, we’ll always feel a bit like that when encountering new tools and experiences.

The good news is, when it comes to Sketch , we’re always here to help! Our goal is to be as helpful, transparent, and clear as possible. We explore, brainstorm, and collaborate to find the best solutions for you.

Regarding hover states, I’d recommend checking out these resources:

Take a look, and if you want to dive deeper into the challenges you’re facing with hover states, let us know.

I hope this helps! :crossed_fingers:
