Question about borders

I’m currently working on a design, and need some help. Here’s what I have so far:

The issue is with the borders on the profile pictures, I’m trying to get an effect where the border blends in with the background, the issue is I want to have a “*” in the background with a darker shade. Is there a way to make the border blend or make it transparent and still be on top and make a cut into the profile pictures?

I don’t think you’d be able to do that with borders unless each border uses a gradient and you get real specific with the angle and colors of your gradient so that it matches the background.

One way of doing is is to create a bunch of shape layers that look like a crescent moon
image and then use an image to fill the shapes. The first image on the far left would just a be a circle.
