It’s just in the way; we don’t need it. How do we turn this off?
That would be View > Canvas > Show Minimap (or just control+M to switch it on and off).

As Dmitry said, you can do it that way, but you can also click on the view controls in the toolbar and toggle it on/off from there.

What to do if the mini map doesn’t show even if i have it selected in the menu?
Note that even when the Minimap is enabled, it will only appear when elements on your Canvas are not in view. So if all your layers fit within the viewport, the Minimap will hide, until the layers move offscreen again.
