I’m currently using Sketch version 101.8 on macOS Sequoia 15.4.1, and I’m considering upgrading to 2025.1.3.
However, I’m still hesitant because I’m worried about potential bugs or unfamiliar new features in the newer version.
Before I go ahead with the upgrade, I’d like to confirm something:
If I open a Sketch file using the latest version (e.g. 2025.1.3), will that file still be compatible with an older version like 101.8 — in case I successfully downgrade later?
I understand how to upgrade the app, but I’m not sure how to go back to a specific previous version.
Is there any official way to do this, or would I need to manually keep a backup?
We generally don’t recommend opening documents in Sketch Athens (2025+) and then opening them in older versions. This is because with the upgrade to Athens, there’s also a document model update that fundamentally changes some of the things in the way documents are handled and processed by the app.
What we suggest:
Create a copy of your document
Open that version of the document in Sketch Athens
Check if everything is alright, and that everything looks good when you open it in Sketch Athens.
If you feel comfortable while using the new version, then you can safely upgrade.
If not, you can stay on 101.9 which is the latest version we released before Sketch Athens
We also don’t recommend running two stable versions simultaneously case they both store their preferences in the same directory, but you can:
, and use that one which includes even more enhancements and performance upgrades
And keep your stable version (Sketch 101.9) intact so you can go back if you wish to do so.
This way you’ll be able to use both versions of the app, one to try it out and the other to keep working as you normally would while you get used to the new changes.
We’ve also updated our documentation to reflect some of the new improvememts
