Superscript Issue (but different this time!)

Hi Sketch team!

I’ve been a long-time user of Sketch, and truly love the platform. However, I’ve encountered a challenge when working on large-scale projects, particularly in industries like medical design, where footnotes are frequent and integral to the copy.

The challenge:
The current superscript and subscript tools don’t function well in these contexts. Specifically, there’s no way to include superscripted footnotes within a symbol. The only workaround is to detach the text from the symbol, manually adjust the baseline, and resize the text to fit. This process quickly becomes tedious and essentially renders the use of symbols obsolete in these cases. Even in the manual workaround, not having a functional superscript and subscript button can make it really time consuming to integrate this text formatting in the design.

Given the importance of footnotes in projects like this, I wanted to reach out to see if there are any plans to improve the functionality—especially in relation to symbols. It would be amazing if we could retain the flexibility and consistency that symbols offer while also easily incorporating superscripted text.

I’d love to hear any thoughts from the community and the Sketch team. Thank you so much for your continued work on Sketch!

Hey there. What about if you use the specific superscript / subscript characters from the Character Viewer panel in macOS? Just type which option you want to use into the search field to see all the options available in that setting. Then you can insert the relevant characters directly into your text override in your Symbol, with no need to detach anything.
