Smart Layout Structure List with Background and side padding

I’m working on an app design but have an issue with the responsive nature of the smart layout. The expanding of the list sections and the overall list works great but the shrinking doesn’t shrink accordingly and the padding around the list sections keeps needing to be added using a background shape that gets distorted despite the pinning.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get around this? The only option I’ve found is designing items in artboards and turning them into symbols but not all my items can be symbols since sections can change the number of item rows inside of them.

Hi Kevin.

Looking at your image, I think this might be the setup you would need to create, in order to achieve the effect you want.
