Restrict starred versions for users

Hi,

Is it possible to block a Editor User in order for him not to be able to restrict starred versions?

We are finding that for some editors, when they save a document they do it without realizing that they starred the document. Is this a bug? Because they are not actively do in it.

Thanks!

Hi Noe,

It’s not currently possible to block an Editor user from starring versions I’m afraid.
When the editor does save a version, they would either have to specifically click the star when saving a new version in the Mac app, or click the star in the versions list in the Web app in order to create a starred version.

It is also worth mentioning that you can unstar versions as well if this would help!

Hi @noe

As Keir mentions, Editors can always star or unstar versions. There’s no way to restrict that and it’s always an explicit action. Also, any Editor can also star and unstar past versions at any moment.

However, I’m wondering if your question comes from the effect that starred versions cause: an Editor stars a version and then creates, say, 5 new ones. All unstarred. To all other non-editor users, none of these new versions will be available.

And if it’s a library, no one, not even Editors, will get any updates done after the starred version.

The key part is to note is that once a version is starred, it’ll remain that way until someone stars a new one or removes it (assuming there are no more starred versions).

If you’re having starred version issues with a document, look through the entire version history to see if there’s an older starred version that you may need to get rid of.

I think this came up somewhere else but it’d be awesome to splits users between those that see all updates and those that just see stars

Hi Ash,

We already have a split:

  • Editors / Admins see all the updates
  • Guests and Viewers only see starred versions

Would another way of splitting be useful for you? Or did you mean to set up custom groups that see one way or the other?

Yeah, for example if you have stakeholders only see stars and developers get everything for example. Just so you can arbitrarily curate who sees what. Something might be ready to be digested by one group in a business but not another yet. I think someone else has also asked about permissions for pages.

Both of these would be fantastic and above the amount of permission management allowed by Figma

Thanks for your answer Jorge!

The problem is that we don’t know why the star is being placed there, since it’s not being marked when creating the version (as shown in the image) nor in Sketch Cloud.

However, suddenly some versions of certain documents are appearing with stars, and we don’t understand why…

Thanks for the reply Noela.

I just tested and it works as expected. Unless you click on the star icon on the Save Version dialog, the version will not be starred.

It could also be the case that these unexpected starred versions were added from the web app. If you’ve dismissed the version comments dialog, it’s easier to click and not notice you’ve starred a version:

Thanks @Ash

I created this topic for your suggestion:

About permissions for pages, we’re currently working on that in the Partial Document Sharing project :sketchy_cool:!
