I’ve just applied a graphic frame to my icon and realized I need some padding around it. The only solution I see is to add another frame for that padding. Why isn’t there an option for padding within the “graphic frame” itself? Or is there something I’m overlooking?
I’m not sure that graphics frame is a replacement for slices. Slices are a very specific feature that is very useful in some weird scenarios. One of those is preparing 9slice images. These seem outdated but there are sometimes needs for some specific part of an image to be cut which is maybe difficult to do otherwise. Slices are handy because they can be placed above anything and export anything below as an image.
Hey @arunbsonline
Welcome to the Forum! Padding is handled by stacks as you show in your video, but since both Graphics and Stacks are Frames, you don’t need to add an extra frame.
Add Stack layout to your icon and then turn it into a Graphic to avoid the extra frame.
I understand your point, but isn’t the usual workflow to drag and drop the icon onto the canvas? When we do this, it automatically creates a graphic frame. Can you explain how this process works?
Feature request: I want to be able to copy layout settings and apply it to other frames. I find myself applying the same props over and over.
‘Copy style’ should include layout properties (alignment, padding, etc)
Can you bring back the option to hide layer selection and layer highlight please?
I understand the team wants to reduce menu clutter, but these are actually useful.
Layer highlight is kinda distracting. Let me focus on the my work. Sketch UI should be unobtrusive.
Hey,
When you drag and drop an SVG it’ll be imported as a Graphic, and from there, you can add Stack layout to control the padding.
Although it’s inside another frame, it allows you to control the padding, and you can keep both: the stack to edit padding and the graphics frame as well.
In the video I shared earlier, I inserted a symbol instance, which are inserted as layers and from there I added the stack first and then turned it into a graphic.
Hi Cris, I have sent in the file and a video I had recorded at the time
@wwwedran Slices are not going anywhere. Following the latest slice feedback, we’ll also make it possible to hide slices via the menu in the Layer List.
I expect this will be in the next beta update.
Hey there!
First of all, huge thanks for this update. The new layout feature feels great!
I’ve been using some libraries I created recently, and noticed that when I’m working with files those libraries are attached to, updates from the libraries don’t show up until I close the lib file. I was wondering if there might be a way to push libs updates without having to close the file? Cheers!
Hi @remtse,
This could be caused by not creating a version. When you make changes to a library, you have to create a new version (⌃⌘S) to get the updates. If you make changes but do not create a version, Sketch will create it for you when you close the file, which would explain why you don’t see the updates until you close it.
Let me know if this was the case, thanks.
Appreciated. Thanks for the update!
A post was split to a new topic: Title hello
Style is style, layout is a different topic, so don’t fully agree. However, I agree with you on the fact that we need a way to copy and paste layout settings to avoid repetitive tasks. This has been suggested earlier in this thread and Sketch team answered that they will certainly consider it.
Indeed. We’ve just finished building a Paste Layout action, which will be in the next beta. There’s no dedicated “Copy Layout” action, you just Copy, then Paste Layout, and the layout properties of the container you copied will be pasted onto your selection.
What could be causing the dataset to be incompatible with “stacks”?
Hey folks There’s been a bit of chatter about Copy/Paste Layout — that’s now available in the latest beta.
As Paulo mentioned above, there’s no explicit “Copy Style” action. Just copy any container with stack/smart layout properties, select a new container and choose “Paste Layout” to paste those properties.
Enjoy!
Hmmm that’s no good, we’ll look into it.
color picker acting weird.

We’ve seen this recently but not in the most recent betas.
Could you please confirm:
- Which version are you using? See Sketch Beta > About Sketch Beta.
- Do you have screen recording permissions enabled in System Settings for the Sketch Beta app? These are in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording.
