Hello everyone,
I tried searching this forum and didn’t find a similar request, I hope I’m not repeating the suggestion.
Currently, in Sketch’s web app, there’s access to layers by right clicking an element, and they appear in the context menu.
This has a few downsides for handoff:
If the layer is a symbol, all the nested symbols, groups and layers are displayed in this context menu list, resulting in too much information for the developers.
It is difficult for a developer to identify known components (example: if using a shared library) in the screen, as layer names are not at sight and to see them, a right click is required, for each.
Having layer list available at sight in artboard screen, and allowing users to click the list to highlight in the layer and viceversa (just like in the Mac app), would give a nice overview on the contents of the artboard to the users checking them.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and ideas
When designing the web app’s inspector we wanted to strike a balance between exposing the design’s structure (artboards, layers, etc), which isn’t always relevant to the implementation in code, with trying to make it simple for users to simply click on the element they want and surface the relevant properties in the inspector panel.
However, we do appreciate that the more complex the design, and the more the designer makes use of features like symbols and components, it can become fiddlier to navigate with the “mini layer list” (opened by right-clicking on the canvas) – especially if the web app user hasn’t discovered they can open this list with a right-click in the first place
We’re currently exploring some additions to our web app’s handoff tools and the inspector, so your feedback is well timed, and I’ll be sure to share it with the team.
In the meantime, if other users wish to share thoughts and ideas relevant to @inma’s suggestions above, please feel free to reply
