Hey everyone! Does anyone have experience with importing a map of a specific area (like from Google Maps) as a vector? I’ve been searching online but haven’t had much luck. Any tips would be greatly appreciated — thanks in advance!
There might be tools like this one https://mapcreator.io/mapping-tool/vector-maps/ that can help with that but I haven’t used it so not sure how good it is. You can export as SVG and then you should be able to import into Sketch.
Hey, thanks! I found it too, but the service is a bit odd, and their SVG files don’t work perfectly in Sketch.
Hi Damian,
One question about this: is it absolutely necessary to import in SVG format? Many times maps are used as backgrounds and PNGs will work just fine. With PNGs you also avoid your file becoming too large with complex vector graphics.
You could try getting the data you want from OpenStreetMap, then load it into Quantum GIS and edit/export to SVG from there.
For less dynamic/complex maps, I would recommend just tracing it by hand and creating your own SVG. Depends on what your needs are.
Thanks so much for the help, everyone! I really needed a vector map because I was planning to tweak and style it my own way, plus I knew it would be printed in a large format later on. So, I decided to go the old-school route and used Image Trace in Adobe Illustrator… but honestly, I was kinda hoping that Google Maps, Apple Maps, or some other big player had an official API I could use to generate the map.
Mapbox I think allows some customization for their maps. Worth checking out.
