Barcelona much more RAM than before?

I reported this to support but was told it wasn’t anything abnormal; am I the only one for who Barcelona has been taking much more memory than it used to? Just now from having the app open between 10am and 4pm, Sketch is now taking 32GB of memory. It used to almost never go higher than 10GB.

A week ago I saw it taking 50GB (at which point my computer becomes unusable so I have to restart Sketch). Again I never saw this happen prior to Barcelona.

Hello @Sam!

We’ve been discussing possible reasons behind this issue, since we’ve not seen other users reporting similar memory leaks (if someone else has experienced this, please tell us!). Therefore, we suspect this could be related to specifics on your end.

Let’s see your list of plugins. Could we have a screenshot (or set of screenshots if you have a long list) showing your list of installed plugins in Sketch > Settings > Plugins? If you don’t want to send them in public, you know you can send them through productsupport@sketch.com. We’ve seen how some plugins have created similar performance issues in the past. That way, we’ll try to replicate your environment in our tests and see if we can obtain consistent results to identify the problem.

In the meantime, we’ve been doing some tests with the Library you shared with us before and so far, there’s no clear outcome, but rest assured that we keep investigating. That list of plugins will help for sure.

I only have Automate installed. I’ll disable it for the day and see how it goes and will report back.

Have been running Barcelona with Automate disabled for the entire day yesterday and memory usage is now at 42GB

Thank you for taking a look, Sam. What work/tasks did you do with Sketch during that time? On our side, uptime itself is not causing this, so we’d like to replicate some of the actions you do often.

Nothing particular really just common editing… I’ll try to watch memory usage more often while working in Sketch and spot a pattern.

If it can be of any help, closing my working doc does not free up memory. Not sure if this is intended, but I would expect Sketch to release that memory if the document gets closed.

Hi Sam, we’ve found a potential memory leak that could be related. We’ll let you know when we have more information. Thanks for your patience :person_bowing:

Just to confirm. You can still work no problem right? Or do you notice any slowness aligned with the memory used?

When I started this thread Raul from support reached out to me with more questions. I figured it was linked to this thread but maybe not

A team mate had Sketch freeze completely, taking 75GB of RAM (:scream:) and she sent sketch logs over to you. Turns out embedded fonts might be our issue here. As suggested by Raul I disabled them completely and after 24 hours it appears to make a huge difference on memory usage (and therefore performance, especially after many hours of running Sketch).

Is the memory leak you’re referring to related to to embedded fonts as well?

Hi Jorge,

Follow up on this: everyone on our team regularly run into Sketch ending up taking 30, 40, 50GB of RAM which makes Sketch completely unusable. Disabling embedded fonts isn’t an option either as it breaks dev handoff.

Is there any update on this? This seems like a critical bug that’s probably affecting anyone using embedded fonts?

Hi @samvermette ,

Have you tried the latest beta version 2025.2.2?

If not, can you give it a try and let us know how it goes? :folded_hands:

I’m seeing the same issue. I updated earlier this week and now I am consistently seeing over 10GB of memory usage when I used to see a maximum of about 4GB. I’ve been using it for less than an out this morning and I’m already at 11.38 GB.

Should I be creating a ticket for this or is is something that is being worked on? I have not tried the beta at this point.

Hi @parsenault

Thanks for reporting. We’re currently working on this, but it will be a big help if you can share a copy of the file you’re having issues with.

We’ve identified specific scenarios that increase RAM usage, but having access to your file will help us see if your case fits the same scenario or if it’s a different one. Performance issues are complex and can change a lot from one file to another.

If possible, share a copy of your file to our support address:
productsupport@sketch.com

If you share a workspace link, please make sure to enable Support Access so we can see the file

Many thanks :folded_hands:
