Steps to reproduce:
- Create one or more color variables
- With an element selected, click the color variable button
- Search for a defined colour
- Press down arrow/tab to enter list
- Press enter to assign the colour

This is definitely something we need to look into since we can reproduce the same outcome using your steps.
