Replace Image and keep style

Hi Sketch experts, I have a question I hope someone can help me with.
I am trying to create some mock-up photos for an App I am working on. I found some sketch files for the phone I wanted and downloaded them. Once opened I simply copied a screenshot I had from the App and pasted it into Sketch (just as a test) and Sketch pasted it perfectly in the phone bezel. I was amazed! Unfortunately, I am not able to reproduce that perfect paste of the other screenshots.

What I want to accomplish is the image on the left, the default image is on the right.

The perfect paste (left image) is what I want to repeat (no idea how I did this):

My questions are, how can I repeat the perfect paste? I have no idea what I did to get the screenshot to fit perfectly on the first try. What is the fastest way to import 24 images to create “mock-up” images.

Thanks!

PS
I am not a designer.

Hey there!

Thank you for posting this, this is a good example of how Symbols can make your work, and these types of tasks really really easy!

Create a device frame mockup

  • First, let’s grab our phone frame. A good resource we have for this is the Meta template page. You can download just the frame of popular devices that you can use on your design and mockups.
  • Select the device you want to use, and Import it into Sketch (you can drag-n-drop the frame in the Canvas)

Create Image Override

  • Now, let’s create a new rectangle and make sure that it:
    • Fits the current screen size (on the mockup)
    • We adjust the borders so the borders are also trimmed when we paste the image there.

Wrap up

Once you’re done with that, you can create a Symbol ouf of these two combined elements. This will allow you to, copy an image you want to use as mockup, select the override (the image you created behind the frame) and then, paste your image so it appears right away on the phone frame.

Here’s a quick document I put together to show you how I did it. You can also achieve this using Masks for the screenshot and the device frame, but this way seems to be quicker.

Thanks for your response and video, really really appreciate it. I will give it a shot and report back.

@raulrincon , just wanted to follow up and say that you video was extremely helpful and I was able to create all the mock-up screens.

Thank you very much!

2 followup questions.

  1. What is a symbol vs the “folders” to the left side of the screenshot?
  2. Is it possible to place a short video as a “screenshot”?

Thanks again for your help!

Hey there @odesey!

  1. A Symbol is a Component that you can re-use any number of times you want on your document. What is great about them is that they’re all connected. You can do things like update the frame on all of them, by just updating the original Symbol and all the screenshots you have created would stay intact, but the frame would update instantly on all of them.
  2. You cannot…for now :smirk:
