Inconsistencies creating symbols — what am I missing?

I’m having a hard time understanding what causes a stack to be converted into a symbol container or nested inside one.

To try and isolate the issue, I created a simple file with two pairs of future buttons — each made with just a rectangle and some text. I then converted both sets into stacks.

Here’s the strange part: when I create a symbol, the stack that has a shadow gets nested inside a symbol container. The one without a shadow doesn’t. Am I doing something wrong? Should the presence of a shadow make a difference?

Even more confusing — if I move the stack with a shadow to the Symbols page and create the symbol from there, it doesn’t get nested.

I’ve attached the project file and a short video demo to this post.

What am I missing here? I’m new to Sketch and just trying to understand how to create a simple button that scales properly with its text.

Thanks in advance!

Hey there!

Thank you for flagging and bringing this to our attention.

This does seem like a bug, and we were able to replicate the behaviour on our end. We’ll pass the video and the findings to the team so they can check it out as well!

Thank you for the quick reply, @raulrincon!

I honestly didn’t expect this to turn out to be a real bug report
