Filling a Frame
The possibilities for filling a frame with an image are quite limited at the moment. Are you planning to develop this feature further?
Right now, I use frames as image sources because I need to keep them organized, and this is the only way to do it. Examples:
Assets/Photos/Product/Caeses/Case.blue
Assets/Photos/Product/Caeses/Case.yellow
Assets/Photos/Product/Caeses/Case.black
…
Assets/Photos/Product/Electronics/Headphones.red
Assets/Photos/Product/Electronics/Headphones.black
Assets/Photos/Product/Electronics/Headphones.blue
Assets/Photos/Product/Electronics/Headphones.whtie
…
I have a ProductPhoto symbol that contains another symbol:
Assets/Photos/Product/Cases/Case.blue — which is just an example product photo.
To replace Case.blue with Case.yellow or Headphones.red, I simply select another instance from the Symbol Instance menu in the Inspector.
The problem is that if I want to fill the frame with an image, I can’t use my structured image library located in Assets/Photos/Backgrounds/. Sketch gives me this:
Which… doesn’t meet the need
. From here I can only select a file from my Mac, drag and drop it into that little box, or add the picture with the [+] button to Global Images / Document Images… but what does that actually mean? Let’s check.
So I checked here:
And I have looked here:
Yeah, there’s nothing like an Image Library — or any kind of centralized place for images — in Sketch, and the way I’ve been doing it for years is still a better option here in Copenhagen.
There are only some Graphic Templates (which I don’t use and don’t really care about). But I’ll check that feature anyway…
I’ve just added my first Graphic Template:
What next? It’s empty — how am I supposed to edit it?
Right-clicking for options seems to be the way.
No editing options here…
Maybe Cmd+Enter will take me to the template source, just like it does for a symbol source?
Hmm… it looks like an instance (it’s grey). I don’t need an instance, so let’s delete it and start again.
Back to Graphic Templates:
(…)
So, after a while… I figured out that what I did once again added something like a Graphic Template frame to one of the many pages (randomly picked one?)
It looks like a frame. I don’t see any superpowers — it seems more like a gimmick feature. Whatever it does, I can handle it with symbols/frames anyway.
What does this mean for me and my case? Can I fill a Graphic Template into the frame? Nope.
So yeah, that’s my problem: I want to fill a frame with an image from an organized library that’s already in my Sketch file, not from my computer — and I can’t do that.
