Duplicate Option Creates Folder, Not Color Variable

Hi Sketch Team,

I’m experiencing unexpected behaviour in Sketch Copenhagen 2025.3 related to Color Variables. This behaviour did not occur in previous versions of Sketch.

1. Right-Click → Duplicate Not Working Properly

In older versions, when I right-clicked a color variable and selected Duplicate, Sketch created a clean duplicate of that single color variable inside the same group.

But in Sketch Copenhagen 2025.3:

  • Right-clicking a color variable

  • Selecting Duplicate

…creates a new folder instead of duplicating the selected color variable.

2. “+” Button for New Color Variables Feels Confusing

Although the “+” button still allows adding new color variables, the workflow is now less intuitive:

  • The flow is not as smooth as the previous Duplicate method

  • When Duplicate does not work as expected, it becomes harder to create consistent shades or color sets

For designers managing multiple color shades, this adds extra steps and can break the design system’s organization.

Suggestions

  • Restore the previous behaviour where Right-Click → Duplicate duplicates the selected color variable itself

  • Improve the UX consistency between Duplicate and the “+” button when adding color variables

  • Ensure that Duplicate does not create folders unless the user explicitly chooses to create one

Thank You.

Hello @dilshan_emedia.lk, welcome to the community!

Thanks for your feedback regarding the use of components in the Components View. I’m making sure it lands on the Product team’s desk.

Regarding the issue you’re reporting with component duplication, we’re somewhat puzzled after conducting some testing, as the issue is inconsistent at best.

It appears to be related to opening a document that was created with an older version of Sketch. Could you let me know if this is the case?

Additionally, once we’ve reproduced it once, closing and reopening the file with the latest version (2025.3.1) appears to resolve the issue, as we’ve not been able to reproduce it a second time. Could you let us know if that’s the case for you as well?

If you’re consistently reproducing the issue with that document, we’d like to have a local copy of it. Could you share it with us at productsupport@sketch.com? We’ll take a look asap.

Thanks for reporting!

I think the previous screen recording I uploaded wasn’t clear for you to understand the issue. I’ve now uploaded a new screen capture. Could you please check this one?

Hi Dilshan,

Indeed, that’s the bug we could briefly reproduce.

A couple of questions:

  • About the versions. Did you create this document in a previous version of Sketch? If so, which one? If you’re not sure, could you let us know a ballpark estimation on when you did, so we can look for the version ourselves?
  • When we reproduced this issue and once we close and reopen Sketch, the issue was not there anymore. Could you confirm if that solves the issue for you as well?

Please let us know, we’ll take a look!
