(Help) Edit Symboles

Hi,

I created some symbols (icons), but I forgot to remove the fill color, so now everything is taking the same color. I want to remove the color, but I don’t know how. And if I remove it, could it cause issues with the other elements?

This also applies to the font.

I created it as a symbol/style as well, but now I want to change it so it doesn’t have a fixed color. Also, the left/right text alignment, does anyone know how to fix this?

The problem is that I’ve designed a lot of things already, and now if I change one thing, it
affects all the other components.

For example, when I click and create a badge with a red color, and then set the icon to white — if I later change the icon inside that symbol, it automatically switches the color back to black (which is the default color of the symbol). That’s where I’m having the problem.

Thank you!!

Hi,

There’s a really effective way to handle the same color for the label and the icon. Group both layers and add a tint to the folder. This will keep the same color for both when you change to any icon in your library or document

Here’s the layer setup:

And a video that shows the icon overrides (icon and color). The video shows switching color variables, but it works the same if you select colors with the color picker

Hello,

Thanks i have color picker here u can see, but when i add on badge it changes as u saw up there.

im uploading a video to let u know more.

Hi Wigi,

I can see that the icon changes color. Did you try the group and tint technique I mentioned in the previous reply? You can also share here a sample file. Just copy and paste one of the buttons (symbol instance or symbol source) into a new document and share it here. That’ll help me see you exact layer structure.

Hey! Any plans to address the underlying issue - nested symbols don’t retain their overrides when swapped?

The tint + group combination feels more like a workaround than an intended function.

When symbols are swapped while not nested, they retain overrides just fine, it’s only when they’re nested inside other symbol, the overrides are lost when swapped.

idk how to do that?

Here’s how to do the tint technique:

  1. Open your symbol source
  2. Select the icon and label layers and press ⌘G
  3. Select the group you just created and click on the “+” button of the Effects section
  4. Select Tint
  5. Choose the color you want for the icon and the label

i already did this and didnt work

Hey, sorry to hear about that.

@wigopaj591 Can you share a sample file? Just copy and paste one of your instances into a new document. You can share the document here or send it to productsupport@sketch.com

I tiried this again, and it was another solution.

DO NOT GROUPE THEM.

Just click the Effects>Tint then put color that u want.

Why?

Cuz for example i have 2 icons one on the left one on the right and in the middle its the txt, if i try to turn off with toggle button one icon i cant or u can but it shows the full size of the button.

Thank you Jorge.
All the best.
