Is it possible to copy and paste a string of text from one text object to another and retain the individual tracking/kerning (labelled character in Sketch) (which over the entire selection would be labelled ‘multi’ of each letter? Try as I might, I just cannot manage it.
Secondly, is it possible to edit the kerning/tracking/‘character’ as part of an symbol override?
Thanks,
Hi there,
Yes, it’s possible! Use the option Paste as Rich Text. You can find it in Edit > Paste > Paste as Rich Text, or press ⌥⇧⌘V
About the second one, nope; you cannot edit the kerning or tracking on a symbol instance’s text.

Thank you very much, Jorge. So simple - just a blind spot from me.
It’s a shame about the kerning on a symbol’s instance. Is there any reason that isn’t a feature - is it too hard to implement?
I kind of had the same thoughts about other things you could do with individual words, or characters, in an instanced symbol to perhaps highlight text in different colours rather than doing it with a mask many times over (for different instances with different strings of text overrides)
Thanks,
Hey!
We’re actually introducing some improvements to our text styles and Overrideds, and one of te things we’re enabling is Markdown support in the Override Input field.
This means that if your font support multiple font weights, you can do something like:
He*llo*
to make the llo
part of the text Bold.
- It also works with Italics by using
_llo_
the underscore symbol.
Lastly, if you really want to play around with different colors on a single string of text, we’d recommend using Gradients on them, with defined stops. This allows you to create very detailed stops and color changes. It might not get you the full way there but maybe it could help a little!

(btw, this document only works with our latest Beta and beyond. You can get it here)
