Click and drag scaling with groups issue

Hi,

Just updated to the latest version of Sketch on the MacOS desktop app, from the preceeding version before Athens update.

Was exploring frames and stacks, but first just tried to create a simple set of rectangles and grouped them (cmd+g).

And then tried to scale them by dragging the corner of the group and it wont do it, no matter with or without any additional keys being held (shift, command etc). It does not keep them proportional in shape.

Im not sure why? using the scale tool option works fine, but dragging the corner… its not having it?

So I opened up a older document created before Athens update, and a group within that worked, so why are these new groups not working. Tried exactly the same method with a bunch of circles… still didnt work correctly?

Any help would be appreciated.

After looking looking at the grouping, its now obvious that auto pinning is happening when creating the group and pinning each element and applying ‘fixed’ to each individual object. Is there a way to turn this off by default as I don’t need groups to do this?

Hi Paul,

Apologies for the late reply. You bring up an important topic here: sizing options and pinnings, which are deeply related to Frames and Graphics. These new container types were introduced in the Athens update. Groups have changed too as we’ll see.

The default behavior for groups used to be that sizing options were off, so they would resize proportionally. Now, the sizing rules of groups follow the sizing rules of their parent container:

  • Groups inside frames will adjust their contents based on the sizing and pinning of the parent frame
  • Groups inside graphics will resize proportionally, since graphics don’t have visible layout properties, they always resize their contents proportionally.

Here’s a demo:

1- Resizing a group inside a Frame

2- Resizing a group inside a Graphic

Frames and Groups have editable sizing and pinning options, but that doesn’t mean you always need to tweak them or think which one you should use. If you want proportional resizing, Graphics will get you that every time.

Groups still have a place and work nicely with Frames and Graphics. I recommend this guide to get familiar with Frames, Graphics and what’s changed with groups:

I hope this helps!

Hi Jorge,

Thank you for your feedback, and the explanation of how the differences work between old grouping, frames and graphic elements. The blog page is extremely helpful and more in depth than I had previously managed to find details on, so thank you for the link.

Thanks for your help!
